Nostalgia of Mud

The exhibition Nostalgia of Mud is a group exhibition with artists Antoinette d'Ansembourg, Antoine Carbonne, Asger Dybvad Larsen and Karl Monies.
Inspired by travels between Belgium and Denmark, this exhibition wishes to create cultural exchanges. Showing young artists based in each country also follows Cantina's ambition to promote upcoming initiatives.
Through ceramic and painting, the show emphasizes both an extravagant approach inspired by pop-culture and an affection for a more minimal aesthetic. Indeed, the spray painting in Carbonne's worlds together with the glaze in d'Ansembourg's ecosystems bring forward brightness and colors. By sheer contrast, they seem to rock the roughness and flaws of Monies' approach to clay and the coarse textiles in Dybvad's compositions.
Duality is also present in the artists' individual interests, as they all swing from tradition to popular images. While raising a question of influence from the artists' background and affinities with their local scene, this exhibition aims to create an interesting display of contrasts and similarities.
Through these variations appear a peculiar aesthetic between nostalgia and innovation which reminds us of Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood's 1982 show Nostalgia of Mud, rooted in the tradition of classic craftsmanship, while still irresistibly.
