Cyklus af formålsløs drift
12.05 - 02.06 2023
The exhibition Cyklus af formålsløs drift is a solo exhibition by Cilla Leitao. The opening will feature a concert by Michael Schiøler Tingsgård at 18:00.
What unites the works in Cyklus af formålsløs drift (Cycle of Aimless Drift) is that in some way they are all created using artificial intelligence. Whether it's video created using text-to-image generators, artificially created images of dogs that never existed, or new versions of old works created from the imagination of an AI.
In the video work Workers' paradise we find ourselves in a warehouse. The text in the video is partly written based on the artist's own experiences of working in a warehouse and partly co-authored by a text generator. In the work, we get a glimpse into a distorted fever-like version of the warehouse, where the boundaries between machine and human, dream and reality, slowly dissolve.
The motif of the dog reoccurs several times in the exhibition, as a redeeming angel in a world that can sometimes seem harsh and bleak.
The title Cyklus af formålsløs drift, is a rough translation of the concept of samsara, which among other, in Buddhism is used to describe the cycle of birth, death and rebirth, but also as a kind of passage through states of everyday existence. It also brings to mind the "operation" of the warehouse and the fluidity and intangibility of the artificially created images. A drifting cycle that seems to be able to repeat itself forever.
Cilla Leitao
(* 1987) graduated from the Jutland Art Academy in 2014 and is a mixed-media visual artist. She often works from a personal point of view, but always with an opening to the collective experience. The works rarely follow a linear or logical train of thought, but often revolve around the same center. Her practice is often about an outer and an inner space, and the collision of these two.
The exhibition is kindly supported by Aarhus Municipality and the Journalistgården Relief Fund.
